Challenge
After successfully advocating and appealing to the Maryland General Assembly to add adult dental coverage to Maryland Medicaid, the Maryland Dental Action Coalition (MDAC) tasked D&A to reach enrolled adults and inform them about their new benefits.
Unfortunately, many Medicaid members in Maryland were not prioritizing their oral health for many reasons, including uncertainty about Medicaid adult dental coverage.
Solution
Based on extensive market research, D&A developed the My Reason to Smile digital advertising and social media campaign to simultaneously educate Marylanders about new benefits and promote the importance of oral health. Even though privacy restrictions prevented us from directly identifying Medicaid beneficiaries, we got creative. We devised a lookalike model by aligning our audience targeting with Medicaid eligibility criteria, such as income level and age. Ads were developed in both English and Spanish to expand our reach to as many Medicaid enrollees as possible.
The campaign also helped build grassroots momentum through stakeholder toolkits, allowing dental practices and community health organizations to spread the word.
Big Results
In just 11 months, the My Reason to Smile campaign generated over 8 million impressions and exceeded national industry averages.
Social media comments expressing uncertainty about Medicaid adult dental coverage notably decreased. By the end of the campaign, more than 270,000 adult Maryland Medicaid members had received dental care, thanks in part to the campaign’s outreach.
